Rehearsals are in full swing for the grand opening of "Jesus Christ Superstar" next month
Key City Theatre proudly presents the iconic rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar," inviting audiences to experience its captivating performance starting on New Year's Eve and running through January 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, and 20.
Brought to life by the visionary creative team behind acclaimed productions such as Cabaret and Chicago, this January production stands as the pinnacle event of Key City Theatre’s season, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience for all.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, traces its roots to the revered 1970 concept album of the same name and made its ground-breaking Broadway debut in October 1971. Since then, this classic musical has enraptured audiences worldwide, gracing stages with its timeless narrative and electrifying music.
Director Brenda Burley’s creative vision is brought to life by a team of qualified designers and crafts-persons. Set designer Kirsten Taylor has ingeniously crafted a layered design that breathes life into the director's artistic vision. The set, meticulously built by Ty Oler in a space generously provided by Gipman Kitchens & Cabinetry, boasts a unique complexity. This intricate design, described as a "stairway to heaven" amidst the decay of humanity, serves as a compelling backdrop for the actors, allowing them to navigate the diverse levels and nuances of the production.
Burley has set the play in ancient times, and costume designer Brenda Tyson is up to the task, creating hundreds of pieces that fit into the era, while also allowing the actors to move and dance in fluid motions. Chris Tulloch is back as the props master and is creating magic – or at least the illusion of magic - in the production.
Adding to the spectacle, the production welcomes professional lighting designer Rylee Block to the team. Block's expertise promises to enhance the onstage tension, infusing the performance with dramatic and dynamic effects, and elevating the overall ‘rock concert’ experience envisioned for "Jesus Christ Superstar."
